Event Details

Going on a roadtrip? Just drive a lot? In this 3-hour session, you will learn to:

  • Patch a flat tire without removing it from the car.
  • Jack up the car and install the spare tire.
  • Jump-start a dead battery.
  • Check the oil and other fluid levels, and understand their condition.
  • Assemble an affordable little toolkit to accomplish all these tasks and more.
  • Gain confidence in dealing with roadside emergencies, and understand when to call for help.

Everyone who drives a car should have these skills. Do you? If not, sign up for this class -- we might practice on your car! It's a very small session, capped at 6 students, so expect lots of individual hands-on time. Speaking of time, please plan to arrive a few minutes early so we can do waivers and start promptly at 1:00.

ABOUT MONEY:

We're going to use a few dollars worth of supplies (including making a scrap tire look like a pincushion), so the $5-per-student materials fee applies to everyone, i3 member or not. PLEASE BRING CASH. It's simply much easier to handle.

The "suggested donation" is in lieu of a class fee, and only applies to non-members. Just like the dues that members pay, this money goes to support i3's operations, including rent and utilities, equipment maintenance, and more.

Comparable-length classes at similar places cost $65 plus materials, but that's just silly. We'll appreciate whatever you find appropriate! Cash is great, or a check to "i3 detroit" works too. Thank you!

Organizer

i3 Detroit

i3 Detroit is a DIY collective in Ferndale, with tools and resources to facilitate a wide variety of projects. The name stands for "Imagine, Innovate, and Inspire".

Supported by its members but open to guests as well, i3 Detroit's facility hosts workshops and classes as often as possible. Led by volunteer instructors (mostly members), these are usually free, but may require a materials fee for participation.

When there's no class happening (and sometimes when there is!), you'll usually find members in the space, soldering, sewing, welding, sculpting, programming, woodworking, or just hanging out.

Founded in 2009, i3 Detroit has about 70 members and funds its operation mostly through member dues. Donations from students and guests are always appreciated, and have the potential to substantially increase our resources!
